Artspace presents the work of seven
artists, in a reinvention of the Member's Show. Work includes improvised
sculptural assemblage, large-scale multimedia works, installation,
encaustic painting, multi-paneled oil painting and collage.
The
word souvenir derives from the old French, meaning to recall, to come to
mind, to remember. This link speaks eloquently of a drive to attach
significance to objects. Things become records for history, a way to
substantiate the insubstantial. It is a practice of rendering memory
visible, textural and dense.
Found objects are potential vessels
for imagine history. Nostalgic for unkown pasts, we approach things as
artifactual remains, a chance to learn the secrets of their previous
owners.
The artists in this show examine relationship to objects
and memories, realizing that this relationship is, in a sense, mutually
affective.
