Jan 20        OHAYO (Good Morning)-(OZU) -JAPAN -1959

One of only a handful of coloured Ozu films. Set in Tokyo 1959, the film concerns a family living in the suburbs, and is ostensibly about the two boys begging their parents to buy them a television, the parents refusing, and the kids deciding to go on a 'silence strike', refusing to speak to adults until their parents cave. FEB 10        F FOR FAKE -(WELLES) - INTL. -1975

The last major film by Orson Welles, F FOR FAKE is a documentary essay film focusing on the life of art forger Elmyr de Hory, and examining the nature of authenticity and authorship. Often considered one of Welles' most influential films, for its rapid cuts and expert editing. (Wikipedia)

FEB 17        MR. ARKADIN -(WELLES) -INTL. -1962

A French-Spanish-Swiss coproduction, written and directed by Orson Welles. Based on the radio series "The Lives of Harry Lime" and the same character played by Welles in the film noir, "The Third Man," Mr. Arkadin has a convoluted plot and history, having been released several times with different names and edits. MAR 3         FAAT KINE -(SEMBENE) -SENEGAL -2001

Faat Kiné is a film by Ousmane Sembene set in present-day Senegal. It provides a critical look at post-colonial Senegal and the place of women in that society through the story of FAAT KINE, a Senegalese woman who bucks the traditional patriarchal rules by bearing two children out of marriage and providing for herself as a successful businesswoman. MAR 10       DAKAN -(CAMARA) -GUINEA- 1997

Considered the first West African feature film to deal with homosexuality, DAKAN (Destiny) is a French/Guinean drama by Mohamed Camara, about two young men struggling with their love for each other. (Wikipedia)

MAR 17       LE FRANC/LE PETITE VENDEUSE DE SOLEIL -(DIOP MAMBETY) -SENEGAL -1994/1999

As the second installment in Mambéty's trilogy exalting the lives and promise found among ordinary Senegalese, the 45-minute film, La Petite Vendeuse de Soleil (The Little Girl Who Sold the Sun) depicts a young beggar girl, Sili, who on crutches, confidently makes her way through a city of obstacles, evading a group of bullies, and selling newspapers to make money for herself and her blind grandmother. In this parody of the horror genre, complete with secret passageways, sinister men, and frightening apparitions, a Gypsy circus performer and a friend flee their troop. They take refuge in a haunted house, where they soon discover the poor choice they have made.(IMDB)

Jean-Pierre Melville's shimmering, dark, and ultra-new-wave classic is compulisively watchable and impossible to dislike!
