of Toronto-Based Artist Denniston Ewan
January 12 to February 17, 2001
PETERBOROUGH, ON-The work of Denniston Ewan addresses concerns about institutional racism and the portrayal of black culture by the mainstream media. The following is an except from an interpretive text written by Michael Belmore:
"As a child have you ever closed your eyes, spun a globe, and slid your finger along the surface... waiting until it came to a complete stop to see where you would go when you grew up?

The contemplation of the globe is a looking forward on the part of a child to a time when they will be free to do as they choose, go where they please and not be shackled by the perceived restraints of parental and educational authority. … Thankfully there exist artists like Ewan who can succinctly make commentary on the cultural obstructions that are faced as a child and as an adult within our contemporary reality while at the same time poking fun at that which would otherwise be a tool of repression."
